Microsoft is retiring SMTP AUTH and it might affect your print ecosystem
11/09/2025

This decision will significantly impact IT administrators and organizations still relying on legacy methods to handle email traffic.
Beginning March 2026, Microsoft will start blocking Basic Authentication for SMTP AUTH (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol Authentication) across all tenants. The rollout will gradually increase until April 30, 2026, when 100% of tenants will have Basic Auth permanently disabled.
How does this impact my IT ecosystem?
By retiring Basic Auth, Microsoft aims to accelerate the shift to Modern Authentication (OAuth 2.0), however, organizations still using Basic Auth with SMTP AUTH, POP, IMAP, MAPI, RPC, or Exchange ActiveSync are at risk of having their systems down over the night. Services, devices, and apps that depend on Basic Auth may stop working once the protocol is fully retired.
This includes legacy print management solutions that rely on SMTP AUTH for scan-to-email workflows, a critical function in most offices around the world. Without modernization, these workflows could suddenly break in 2026, disrupting daily operations and creating vulnerabilities in IT environments.
